Fiber Reinforced Concrete Advancements in Design and Applications

Hello Flagstaff!  AZ ACI is pleased to announce that we will be holding regularly scheduled Chapter Meetings, and we wish to Welcome the Student Chapter at NAU as they begin to get engaged with ACI locally!

Please join us for this presentation by Jeffrey Ferris with Euclid Chemical Company.  He will cover new developments in material technology and design guidelines that have expanded the application of Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (FRC).  Fibers are made with different materials and can provide different levels of crack control and tensile/flexural capacity for a concrete section.  Some of the applications include slab-on-grade (residential, commercial and paving), topping slabs and shotcrete.

This presentation will review key aspects of ACI 544.4 R-18, "Guide to Design with Fiber-Reinforced Concrete" and the other ACI documents and test methods it references.

    ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

Jeffray Ferris graduated from Purdue University and began his career in synthetic fiber reinforced concrete in 1984.  This marked the initial introduction of synthetic fibers into the concrete industry.  At that time, ASTM test methods for determining fiber performance (for both synthetic fibers and steel fibers) did not exist, and the first ACI 544 committee on fiber-reinforced concrete had just recently been formed in 1982.  Jeff has experienced all the developments that have led up to the current fiber technology and applications.

Please join us for our March Chapter Meeting as we discuss Mix Designs!

    WHY MIX DESIGNS?

If you are in the Construction industry…you will probably deal with Concrete or Masonry Grout Mix Designs.

We plan to bring experts in each stage of the Mix design from Start to Finish. Why do we have mix designs? What do they do for the projects? How does it impact the project?

Communications between the owner/Architect, Geotechnical Engineer, Structural Engineer – Designing-Reviewing-Inspecting, General Contractor, Supplier and Testing Labs play a key role in the success of a project with a proper Mix Design.

    OUR PRESENTERS:

Logan Cantrell - Quality Control – Granite Construction

Aggregate quality, stockpile management and adjusting aggregate production to keep the concrete aggregates within the tolerances of the mix designs.

Randy Harris, PE with Certerra - Geotechnical Engineer

Who hires the Geotechnical Engineer - Owner/Architect?

What is the procedure to gather the Geotech information for the project?

The Geotech would also be scheduled to take samples for the Testing process, which will be transported to the Geotech Lab when ready.

Geotech Lab would submit findings to the Supplier for recording and compiling current Break History.

How is this information put together and where does it go?

Andy DiLeo with MWG Structural - Structural Engineer

What does the Structural Engineer look for in the information from the Geotech?

How does the Structural Engineer use this information for His/Her design? And how is it noted in the Structural Drawings?

What if there is no information available from the Geotech Engineer?

Keegan Abele - General Contractor - Sundt

Contract Documents received by General Contractor. How does the GC know what Concrete Strengths to order from Suppliers?  Review Mix Design and coordinate with the supplier for placement.

Who from the Supplier do they contact?

Lauro Rivas - Supplier - CalPortland

What information does the Supplier use to forward Concrete Mix Designs to the GC?

After GC receives the Concrete Mixes from the Supplier, they are forwarded to the Structural Engineering Team for review.

Sheila Hall  – Shop Drawing Review – Caruso Turley Scott

What criteria is used to review Concrete Mix Designs – and Grout Mix Designs? ACI & ASTM C-476.

Why are some Mix Designs marked up – or rejected?

Reviewed Mix Design submittals are stamped by Structural Engineering Team and returned to GC

Bryan Castles P.E. – Testing Lab. - To talk about the updated ACI-211 Document and also give a perspective from a Mix Design lab point of view.
